INSTITUTION HISTORY

  Kanyakumari is at the southern tip of India and it is one of the important tourist spots in India.  Nagercoil is the capital town of Kanyakumari District and Asaripallam is about 3 kms from Nagercoil town.  Asaripallam is an important place because it is here, one of the earliest TB sanatoriums was started.  The TB sanatorium was started in the year 1937 by the then Travancore Cochin Government.  The campus has an area of 100.5 acres which has now become the Kanyakumari Government Medical College, a serene, eco friendly campus with greeneries all around.
 
            Health is Wealth.  To cater to the needs of people in and around Kanyakumari District, the Tamil Nadu Government decided to start a new Medical College at Kanyakumari District.  The Government T.B. Sanatorium campus at Asaripallam, Nagercoil in Kanyakumari District was selected as the site for the proposed Government Medical College.  In G.O. M.S. No.82/H&FW Department dated 11.03.2001 the Government accorded sanction for the establishment of the new Government Medical College at Kanyakumari District during the year 2001-2002 with an annual intake of 100 students in MBBS Course.  The foundation stone also was laid for the same on 12.03.2001 by the then Honourable Minister for Health and Family Welfare.  Accordingly the Government of India, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare,  New Delhi issued permission to start a Medical College at Asaripallam in Kanyakumari District vide No. U. 12012/101/03-ME (P-II) dated 28.07.2004 and the college is now functioning with effect from 16.08.2014 onwards with an annual intake of 100 students.  Continuance of Recognition is being issued by the MCI on 04.05.2017.   This college is affiliated to The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Chennai.

School of Nursing was started on 3rd February 2004 with an annual in take of 50 students per batch.  Paramedical Courses such as DMLT (100 seats), Anaesthesia Technician courses (35 seats), Theatre Technician course (35 seats), Orthopaedic Technician (35 seats), Respiratory Therapy Technician course (20 seats), Emergency Care Technician (20 seats) and Multipurpose Hospital Worker post (50 seats), were started during 2006.           

We have 24 x 7 hrs Casualty, Accident and Emergency services, Blood Bank, etc.
 
There is a Central Library with 8200 books and 100 Indian & Foreign Journals.  The following Primary Health Centres and Urban Health Centre are being attached to this Medical College, for the training of students studying in this Medical College.

Kanyakumari Govt. Medical College and Hospital is a MCI recognized Government Institution.  Now, it has UG, PG (broad specialities), Paramedical and nursing courses.
